Recognised as a mentor city by the Government of India, PCMC guides smaller cities towards sustainable sanitation practices
Pimpri, November 11, 2025: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has been selected by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, as a mentor city under the national ‘Swachh City Twinning’ initiative. As part of this programme, PCMC hosted a study visit for representatives from five smaller urban local bodies — Surgana (Nashik), Lakhandur (Bhandara), Manchar (Pune), Jamkhed (Ahilyanagar) and Alandi (Pune) — to showcase its advanced solid waste management systems and promote knowledge exchange for cleaner, sustainable cities.
The initiative aims to facilitate cross-learning among urban local bodies by connecting high-performing cities with emerging ones to replicate successful waste management models. The study tour was organised under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar, Additional Commissioner Vijaykumar Khorate, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Pradeep Thengal, and Assistant Commissioner Amit Pandit.
During the visit, delegates explored PCMC’s flagship waste management facilities, including the Waste-to-Energy plant at Moshi, hotel waste-to-biogas units, construction and demolition waste processing plant, biomining project, zero waste project at Dapodi, RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) centre, and sewage treatment plant. The officials were given detailed insights into every stage of the waste cycle — segregation, collection, processing, recycling, and citizen participation.
PCMC officials interacted with the visiting teams and demonstrated various operational and technological systems.
The delegation expressed appreciation for PCMC’s structured and technology-driven approach, stating that the visit provided “a new direction and practical insights” for strengthening cleanliness initiatives in their own cities.
PCMC officials also made a presentation on smart waste tracking, digital monitoring tools, and real-time grievance redressal mechanisms. They highlighted the role of waste-to-energy and biogas projects in generating clean energy and reducing carbon emissions — showcasing how technology and community participation together can drive sustainability.
